Carl yanked open the car door and stood aside while Caroline climbed in. She'd barely settled into her seat when he slammed it shut and strode around to his side.

"My, aren't we in a fine mood."

Carl shot her a look of pure fury. "It's not funny, Cari. I don't appreciate Alexsa's rudeness."

"I wouldn't say she was rude, just cautious. After all, Alexsa doesn't know me from a hole in the wall. Perhaps she thinks I'm the one who planted the bomb."

"Come on," Carl sputtered. "Alexsa knows I'm a better judge of character than that. I'd hardly come waltzing into her house with a murderer on my arm."

Caroline gave him a lopsided smile. "You yourself said the murderer had to be someone like me. Someone with a little knowledge of the town and hospital. Alexsa's a pretty sharp woman. If she's fallen for that stuff about a 'mad bomber', she might also suspect it's no coincidence that I arrived in Rhineburg around the time all those victims were admitted to St. Anne's."

The professor pounded the steering wheel with a closed fist.

"That's ridiculous," he exclaimed. "In fact, it's libelous. And if Alexsa dares to say even one word in public…" Carl shifted uncomfortably. A new thought had struck him. "I hope she doesn't share that theory with the police. They may be desperate enough to believe her."

"I wouldn't worry about the police," Caroline assured him. "After all, they know someone tried to kill me." She explained about the phone call from the FBI.

"You shouldn't be alone when you meet with that agent," Carl said grimly. "I'll go with you."

"Sure, if you want to. Say, who's that woman down by the fence?" Caroline pointed to a solitary figure standing several yards away. She had her back to them and was staring off into the distance, her arms wrapped about her and her long blond hair blowing loosely in the wind.

"That's James's wife, Elizabeth."

As he said it, the woman turned and began walking their way. Her head was bent, her wind-whipped hair covering her face. When she reached the driveway, she looked up. She stared at them for an instant, then changed course and vanished around the side of the house.

"I guess she didn't want to say hello."

Carl shook his head. "Elizabeth is a strange woman," he said. "Very withdrawn, very cool. She seems an odd match for James."

Caroline thought of the jovial salesman with his boyish good looks. Even from a distance she'd noticed that the woman appeared older than he.

"Do they have children?"

Carl nodded. "Two girls. Teenagers."

That could account for it. If Jim was like most men, Elizabeth did the lion's share of parenting. Kids at that age were known to cause gray hairs and age lines in mothers.

"We'd better get to the dealership." Carl switched on the ignition and threw the Jeep into gear. "There's one thing I don't understand. Why would someone who's been out of touch with a man for years suddenly up and write to him? And about
